Why Are Good Candidates Disappearing From the Market So Quickly?

Diane Taylor • October 13, 2026

In a competitive market, the hiring process can make all the difference.

You've finally found the perfect candidate. Then they accept another job before you've even finished the interview process. The reality is that good candidates are often not disappearing from the market, they are simply being snapped up quickly. In a competitive market, the hiring process can make all the difference.

The best candidates aren't always looking for a job

One of the biggest changes in recruitment is the growing importance of passive candidates. Some of the strongest people in the market aren't actively applying for jobs, but they're open to hearing about something better. These candidates aren't going to spend six weeks applying for jobs and waiting for someone to call. If the right opportunity comes along, they expect the

process to be efficient, professional and worth their time.

Strong candidates have more options

A strong candidate might be speaking to two, three or even more employers at the same time. Employers aren't just competing with other businesses for talent, they are also competing with time. If your recruitment process takes three weeks to make a decision while another employer can move in three days, you may lose the candidate before you've had the chance to make an

offer.

Counteroffers are making things even harder

For employers trying to attract someone away from their current organisation, understanding why the candidate is looking can be just as important as understanding what they're earning. Salary still matters but it's not the whole story. Candidates are increasingly looking at the whole package, from salary to flexibility to career progression and employer branding.

Every interaction is part of your employer brand

A candidate who receives clear communication, timely feedback and a professional interview experience is more likely to walk away with a positive impression. Unlike one who gets left waiting for weeks after an interview with no communication. Remember it’s also about selling the company’s brand and why they want to work for you. When hiring be clear about the skills,

experience and culture as well as expected salary. Keep the process moving in a timely manner with strong communication. Understand what motivates the candidate and be transparent about whatever it is that is driving them to seek a new role.
