Why Data Centres Are Booming in Western Sydney

A New Technology Corridor for Western Sydney

Over the past decade, Western Sydney has quietly become one of Australia’s most important hubs for digital infrastructure. While many people associate the region with logistics, manufacturing, and major transport projects, another industry is rapidly expanding behind the scenes are data centres. These highly secure facilities store, process and distribute the enormous volumes of data that power cloud computing, artificial intelligence, streaming services and everyday business operations.

The Digital Backbone of the Modern Economy

Every online transaction, video call, cloud file or AI application relies on data being stored and processed somewhere. Data centres are the physical infrastructure that makes this possible. As businesses continue to move their systems to the cloud and new technologies like AI accelerate demand for computing power, the need for large-scale data centres has grown dramatically worldwide. Sydney is already one of the top cloud markets globally, and Western Sydney has emerged as the region’s natural expansion point due to its available land, power access and proximity to a major population base.

Why Western Sydney?

Several factors make Western Sydney particularly attractive for data centre investment:

  1. Access to Power and Land - Large hyperscale data centres require enormous amounts of electricity and significant space for buildings, cooling infrastructure and substations. Western Sydney offers both, something increasingly difficult to find closer to the CBD.
  2. Strategic Infrastructure - The region is benefiting from major infrastructure developments such as the Western Sydney International Airport and improved transport networks, which are helping attract technology investment.
  3. Connectivity to Asia-Pacific Markets - Sydney acts as a digital gateway between Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. Companies building cloud infrastructure want to locate facilities close to major population centres while maintaining global connectivity.
  4. Proximity to Talent and Businesses - Western Sydney is home to a large and growing workforce, universities and a rapidly expanding technology ecosystem, particularly around Parramatta and surrounding business precincts.

Billions Being Invested in Data Infrastructure

Investment in data centres across Western Sydney is accelerating rapidly. The NSW Government recently approved what is set to become the largest data centre in the Southern Hemisphere, a $3.1 billion project at Marsden Park that will support hundreds of jobs during construction and operations.

Major global operators are also expanding their presence. Hyperscale provider AirTrunk has developed multiple large campuses in Western Sydney, with facilities capable of delivering hundreds of megawatts of computing capacity to major cloud providers. Meanwhile, more than 650,000 square metres of data centre projects are currently in the development pipeline across

Western Sydney, representing a significant portion of industrial investment in the region.

Supporting the Growth of AI and Cloud Computing

The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence is driving an even greater need for advanced data infrastructure. New-generation data centres are being designed to support high-performance computing and GPU-intensive workloads required for AI applications. Facilities currently under development are increasingly purpose-built to handle the high-density power and cooling demands of AI systems, reflecting the next wave of digital transformation.

Economic Opportunities for Western Sydney

The expansion of data centres is creating new opportunities for the local economy beyond technology alone. Large projects generate jobs in construction, engineering, electrical infrastructure, facilities management and security. In addition, data centres often attract surrounding technology businesses, cloud service providers and digital start-ups, helping to position Western Sydney as a key innovation hub.

A New Technology Corridor for Western Sydney

The rapid expansion of data centres signals a broader shift in the economic landscape of Western Sydney. What was once primarily an industrial and logistics corridor is now becoming a critical node in Australia’s digital economy. As cloud computing, AI and digital services continue to grow, the region is well positioned to play a central role in supporting the technology infrastructure that businesses and communities rely on every day.
