Tips for Landing Your Dream Job

Private employment agencies

There are many private employment agencies each specialising in their own particular field. When researching which agency to use, it is worth finding out which occupations or industries they specialise in before spending time registering with them.

Norwest Recruitment specialises in placing candidates in the following positions: business support, reception, secretarial, administration, data entry, personal assistants, executive assistants, customer service, accounts, payroll, credit, book keeping, accountants, finance, human resources, managers, call centre operators, telemarketing officers and sales and marketing professionals.

Career advisory services

Most tertiary establishments have centres that offer career advice and information that display recruitment notices. Vocational education, training institutions and secondary schools will also provide advice about work experience and job placement opportunities.

Schools, colleges and universities

Employers often notify schools, colleges and universities about available positions for school leavers and graduates. Baulkham Hills TAFE would be a good start if you lived in Baulkham Hills, Castle Hill, Norwest Business Park, North West Sydney, The Hills, Seven Hills, Blacktown, Parramatta, Kings Park, Kings Langley or West Pennant Hills.

They also provide the necessary application forms to anyone interested. Your careers teacher or guidance officer should also be aware of the job vacancies that your school has been told about.

Newspapers

Job vacancies are published in all newspapers, be it local, statewide or national. Apart from the 'Employment Section' of a newspaper, you should check the other sections of the newspaper as vacancies may also be scattered throughout.

Internet

The Internet has a number of sites that list job vacancies in Australia. These are usually quite easy to navigate and offer a wide range of search functions, so you are able to filter out unnecessary options that you don’t require.

Advertisements in professional association publications

Many associations publish journals in which positions are advertised. These journals are usually available in local libraries, college or university libraries and state libraries.

Government Gazettes

The Australian Public Service publishes a Gazette every week, with information about job vacancies. Many of the vacancies are open to all people, not just ones already employed in the Australian Public Service. You can find copies of the Gazette at local libraries or online at www.psgazetteonline.gov.au.

Self-advertisements

Many people who are looking for work advertise in the 'Situations Wanted' or 'Work Wanted' columns of newspapers. Some newspapers give free space to unemployed people who want to advertise under these headings. If you are planning on this course of action, first have a look at other advertisements in the paper. Be careful how you word your advertisement as you want to impress a potential employer reading the paper. You also want to be sure that your advertisement does not encourage prank or nuisance callers.

Radio and television

You could contact your local TV and radio stations to see if they have a regular broadcast on the job vacancies available in your local area.

Employers

You may know some companies where you would like to be employed. If so telephone, write or pay a visit in person and ask if there are any suitable vacancies. Although you may not be offered a job straight away, the employer knows that you have initiative and are willing to work.

The Yellow Pages phone book is quite helpful in finding the names of businesses or firms that specialise in specific services and products. Your careers teacher or guidance officer may also help you find the names and addresses of relevant employers to contact.

Notices

Many shops place notices in their windows, on community notice boards or on signs at the front entrance to a business.

Centrelink

Anybody that might be seriously looking for a job would only use this as a last resort. If you should register your name with your local Centrelink Office, they can assess if you are eligible for financial assistance.

Friends and relatives

Finally, you can ask your friends and relatives to talk to their recruiting officer about a position for you. Tell them the type of work you are looking for and give them your resumé to hand out.

At Norwest Recruitment, our goal is to provide you with an experience that is above and beyond the experience you’ve had before with recruitment agencies. Our Consultants live locally and are trained to listen to your needs. We have a sizeable database and very strong relationships with companies in the area and we are hoping to help you with your career search.
